Motormouth Review:
Dongfeng 007 Delivers a “James Bong” Double-O-Seven Experience
Published by David Ting · 29 Oct 2025 · Updated on 7 Nov 2025
A Mission to Wuhan Begins
My mission — unclassified in this case — was to infiltrate the hometown headquarters of China’s state-owned automaker Dongfeng and learn more about a special product codenamed “007.”
The assignment took place in Wuhan, an exotic location where a global virus outbreak had years earlier changed the course of history. Yet thankfully, nothing about this trip involved a pandemic.
Instead, my itinerary included a protected proving ground and an in-house museum that offered no-nonsense insights into the brand’s evolution. There were gadgets everywhere — from basic gimmicks to advanced systems. They could answer my questions, guide me through the infotainment system, and even provide a driverless taxi experience.
Exploring Dongfeng History and Heritage
The paramilitary elements brought a “cold war” contrast to the hot mala I tasted during the trip, reminding me of my national service days when I was trained to fire a rifle but not allowed to vote.
Although I did not rappel from a flying car like in a James Bond movie, I did climb aboard an armoured personnel carrier (APC), complete with a heavy machine gun mounted above its cupola.
The experience triggered a rush of army memories from my NS armour-unit days. We had APCs, light tanks, and a young corporal who never imagined he would become a media platoon commander for an international motoring operation.
I flew into town with Volt Auto to pay a tactical visit to Dongfeng, whose origins trace back to military vehicle production in 1969. Today, the toughest civilian Dongfeng models — such as the M-Hero 917 — are formidable machines even in peacetime.
Gadgets, Test Tracks, and Military-Tech Throwbacks
While such vehicles thrive on urban battlegrounds where huge SUVs try to outgun one another, they are equally at home in rural areas where farmers tread fearlessly in their Jeeps.
On the opposite end of Dongfeng’s automotive spectrum sits the 007 — a symbol of capitalist luxury far removed from the communist heroism embodied by M-Hero models.
The Bond-Inspired Experience with Dongfeng 007
This flagship electric fastback, proudly made in China for the “mastige” (mass-prestige) generation, left my “James Bong” alter ego both shaken and stirred.
The 007 is a low-slung, high-tech limousine that looks like a million renminbi but costs a fraction of that, even when fully loaded with every bell, whistle, toy and gizmo imaginable.
On the Test Track with the Dongfeng 007
Its price stays under a quarter-million yuan in China, and around a quarter-million SGD in Singapore after rebates and promotions.
While there was no Mandarin-speaking quartermaster named QQ at the Dongfeng test track, a helpful staffer guided me while I drove the 007 like a foreign Chinese agent on assignment.
During the test-drive experience, the Dongfeng 007 showcased impressive acceleration and handling, surprising even seasoned reviewers.
Final Impressions: James Bong’s Wuhan Moment
Overall, the Dongfeng 007 delivers a unique mix of luxury, performance, and personality that stands out in today’s EV market.
The 007 proved especially impressive navigating a flooded “storm drain” section of the proving ground — refreshing, safe, and unexpectedly cinematic.
This was my “James Bong” superspy moment in Wuhan — without espionage, spinning, or special effects.
